Observations on Antityphoid Vaccination

1. Metchnikoff and Besredka's living sensitized vaccine produces a typhoid cholecystitis when injected directly into the gall bladder of rabbits. It is therefore infectious. 2. Rabbits cannot be successfully immunized with this vaccine against direct gall bladder infections. Accordingly, rabbits cannot be used to test immunity in this way. 3. The strain used in the Army vaccine is pathogenic, r...

Antityphoid and radical scavenging properties of the methanol extracts and compounds from the aerial part of Paullinia pinnata

Paullinia pinnata Linn (Sapindaceae) is a medicinal plant, locally used in the West Region of Cameroon for the treatment of typhoid fever. This work was designed to evaluate the antityphoid and antioxidant activities of the extracts and compounds of P. pinnata. The methanol extracts of the leaves and stems were tested for antityphoid and antioxidant activities. Compounds were isolated, and thei...

"In war," he pressed, "the microbe kills more than the bullet," and he reminded his readers that more men had died of dysentery and t...

Cross-reactions of Antityphoid and Antiparatyphoid B Horse Sera with Various Polysaccharides

A study was made of cross-reactions of synthetic polyglucose and of numerous plant and bacterial gums in an antityphoid and an antiparatyphoid B horse serum. The observed differences permit conclusions to be drawn regarding certain of the linkages likely to be found in the fine structures of each of the corresponding Salmonella polysaccharides:- 1. Cross-reactions of the antityphoid serum with ...

A Study of the Dissociation of the Rawlins Strain of Bacterium Typhosum with Special Reference to Its Use in the Production of Anti-typhoid Vaccine

A study of the subcultures of the Rawlins strain of Bacterium typhosum used by twelve different laboratories for vaccine production showed that they all differed from recently isolated smooth strains in cultural characteristics, virulence and protective efficiency. Eleven of these Rawlins cultures gave both the flagellar and the somatic type of agglutination in anti-smooth rabbit serum, and the...
